J. Andrew Lanz-O'Brien

Hi there! My name is J. Andrew Lanz-O'Brien, but my friends call me Lanz. I've got an Honours Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Western Ontario, and I'm also a skilled programmer. I'll be starting a Master's in Statistics in September, which I'm very much looking forward to! I'm passionate about mathematics, science (especially biology), and computers. I know C++, Java, R, and HTML. I was a residence soph at Western for 3 years, which is a sort of mentor on a floor of first year students, where I did my best to help them overcome the challenges they faced. I'm currently working on several software projects related to actuarial science, finance, statistics and probability, image analysis, and web development. I also manage several servers and computer systems. I'm an avid Linux user of 10 years, mostly Debian GNU/Linux. I also love most things related to zombies (especially Left 4 Dead and The Walking Dead) and Doctor Who!

Jesse O'Brien

Hi, I'm Jesse. I'm currently working for a startup company based in London, Ontario, called Pulse Infoframe. My job involves a host of things including web development, database administration and managing, designing, and implementing project requirements. My passions in life include programming computers, video games, dicovering new things about the world and music. Fairly cliche for a twenty-something in the IT industry. I have a drive for perfection, and I strive for high standards in everything I do. I enjoy learning things because I believe that knowledge is power. I'm also a very resourceful person with a solid work ethic; I don't leave until I'm satisfied the job is done and done right.

Effective classrooms are those which are run democratically, allowing children to have choice in their learning. Learning is easier when students have a vested interest in it, and are allowed to become risk takers. By utilizing the Interpretive model, students are in charge of their own learning, and teachers guide and nurture learning growth by facilitating, rather than distributing facts and information for students to absorb. Students learn through communication, and interaction between themselves and their teachers.

Students learn from building on prior knowledge and experience, which is referred to as a constructivist approach, and is much like scaffolding. Students can only build on what they know, and each child's experience is different, making it imperative that each learner's needs are assessed, and skills and activities chosen are those that will take the learner forward. Engaging in differentiated instruction will allow students to work at a pace that is appropriate for them, their "zone of proximal development." Teaching is ineffective if all students are addressed in the same manner, and different learning styles are not addressed. Students who are right hemispheric learners will have difficulty with lecture-style teacher centered approaches. Learning for them requires active participation, student centered, authentic learning experiences. Providing variety in lessons will allow both right and left hemispheric learners the opportunity to succeed.

So this is where the magic happens. A place for me to express my ideas, opinions, and whatever else I feel like. On this site, I post random thoughts, questions, realizations, and things I want to share with the world. I blog, share music, and link to sites I think people should know about.

Well, my name is Brianna. I’m a proud UWO student, Ivey ‘13. As much as I’m enjoying my time in London, my heart belongs back on the west coast. I am a musician, a writer, a reader, and a soul. I don’t claim to do any of these things particularly well, but I do what I can.
